Abstract

The article deals with research methods to reveal universal models of polysemic nouns in modern English. The study was conducted on two groups of nouns: nouns referring body parts, from which semantic analysis of "hand" is shown, and nouns referring to face terms, from which semantic analysis of "eye" is presented in modern English. Various methods are used to determine the models of polysemy, among which is a method of contextual analysis. The definitions of the nouns are analyzed through different dictionaries. Second method used is a method of analyzing word definitions on the bases of various English Language Dictionaries including: Oxford Dictionary, Webster‘s Dictionary and other dictionaries of English language listed in the bibliography. On the basis of methods used universal models of polysemous nouns are presented.
